Ato Tekalign Gedamu

Ato Tekalign Gedamu's (TG) Book:

Republicans on the Throne (2011)

Impression: A Beautiful Mind out of Ethiopia!

Simply beautiful, like the green tree; but still waiting for the blossoming of its flowers in the coming spring: - Moving - too moving that I have to restrain myself from making any form of critical review/1; full of vision and emotions, entertaining political anecdotes with serious messages skittering to incite self-reflections; and culturally embedded with down-to earth pragmatism.

Ato TG is A PROTYPE OF AN ETHIOPIAN, who restored again  my confidence in the reflection capacity of the Ethiopian Intellectual; after having perceived so far, all types of rather frustrating "dogmatic discourses out of the box", from different corners of the active Ethiopian political class. An Ethiopian Intellectual prototype, I crave for our NEW ETHIOPIA, in the true meaning of the Word, empathic, honest, open and concerned for the Ethiopian community as a whole with all its cultural diversity and the individual as well, with his healthy and keen roots in the past; ready to blossom in the modern future of our generation.

Here is someone with multidimensional experience through all walks of life (child, young, mature and honored, bright and dark /a short prison sojourn too, not to forget), including his own youthful radical world outlooks he trespassed, and professional, domestic and global career, beginning way back in the ancient regime right up to today. An intellectual, demonstrating the tremendous maturity he acquired through observing, and vested with higher (ministerial included) posts interfacing all the regimes and their global affiliations, this generation has witnessed. - Regimes which, in the last half century ransacked our community, all in their ways, claiming to bring about a presumable change and development.
We know the culminating summary product of this “change” in the human misery and the political crisis, the Horn of Africa suffers these days... once again and again... Ethiopia amidst, as the big regional political player! /3

Every concerned Ethiopian who has experienced or would like to get to know all the ups and the downs of the last half century, to whatever political "breed“, "kin",  "creed" or "ethics" subscribed, should not miss reading TG's personal account, which can be taken to be a micro-critical display of our own recent Ethiopian history.

An authentic and honest account of an Ethiopian intellectual, who shares his life experience; to promote the well-being of our common HOMELAND –ETHIOPIA; full of insights and substance for reflection; be it between the lines or in his ingenious résumé, - Wither Ethiopia- (chapter 20 + 21); especially helpful for the bewildered political class of our nation; with all its skirmish and tiny problems having difficulty to come at peace within itself! - Valuable, without exception, YES - for all sectors of our political class, to come out of their tight political boxes to deliberate together in the formation of their common nation-state - ETHIOPIA!

Ato TG ‘s account is  the fruit of a life-long experience worth all respect and attention. The sort of "Intellectual Bridge" Ethiopia needs to come out of its today's intellectual and political abyss.

Summing up in a word:
If any concerned Ethiopian citizen is missing an authentic insider-witness story on the turmoil of the Ethiopian State and community during the last half century, he/she has to read Ato TG's memoires /2!

The African Conscience

Prologue to African Conscience (1

Tamed to bend

Into the model chairs

Carpentered for it

By the friendly pharos of its time

The black conscience flutters

Yet is taken in.

It looks right

It looks left

It forgets to look into its own self:

The broken yoke threatens to return

Only, this time

In the luring shape

Of luxury and golden chains

That frees the body

And enslaves the mind.

Into its head

The old dragon sun

Now breathes hot civilization

And the wise brains

Of the strong sons of the tribes Pant

With an even more strange suffocation.

Its new self-awareness

(In spite of its tribal ills)

Wishes to patch

Its torn spirits together:

Its past and present masters

(With their army of ghosts

That remained to haunt the earth)

Hook its innermost soul

And tear it apart:

And the African conscience

Still moans molested

Still remains drifting uprooted.

Africa-2011

Holy Africa, the cradle of Man,
The last Joy adrift;
Once uprooted!

And yet, the call of the roots in its tenor,
2011, beginning to come to the senses,
Well founded, in the ground
Of its nature, of the rights it deserves!
Oh come what once lost,
Its dignity: The human spirit!

And yet some way off, deep in the forest.

Till Great Tsegaye rejoices high,
In the soul and his Will!
The light is just, in Egypt.

Still enjoy, the last Joy!

And Ethiopia ?!
Just wait; and wait!
For the next wave,
The mystique, 2012.

Hope & Wait,
To-morrow is for sure, bright!

And don't miss the point "the sharp rocks beneath the icy water are waiting for their prey"! (see the bridge)

THE DIGNITY comes if all forces cope with this challenge of restoring peace and justice for the Libyan People!

The Bridge
I was stiff and cold, I was a bridge, I lay over a ravine. My toes on one side, my fingers clutching the other, I had clamped myself fast into the crumbling clay. The tails of my coat fluttered at my sides. Far below brawled the icy trout stream. No tourist strayed to this impassable height, the bridge was not yet traced on any map. So I lay and waited; I could only wait. Without falling, no bridge, once spanned, can cease to be a bridge. It was toward evening one day- was it the first, was it the thousandth? I cannot tell- my thoughts were always in confusion and perpetually moving in a circle. It was toward evening in summer, the roar of the stream had grown deeper, when I heard the sound of a human step! To me, to me. Straighten yourself, bridge, make ready, railless beams, to hold up the passenger entrusted to you. If his steps are uncertain, steady them unobtrusively, but if he stumbles show what you are made of and like a mountain god hurl him across to land.
He came, he tapped me with the iron point of his stick, then he lifted my coattails with it and put them in order upon me. He plunged the point of his stick into my bushy hair and let it lie there for a long time, forgetting me no doubt while he wildly gazed around him. But then – I was just following him in thought over mountain and valley – he jumped with both feet on the middle of my body. I shuddered with wild pain, not
knowing what was happening. Who was it? A child? A dream? A wayfarer? A suicide? A tempter? A destroyer? And I turned so as to see him. A bridge to turn around! I had not yet turned quiet around when I already began to fall, I fell and in a moment I was torn and transpierced by the sharp rocks which had always gazed up at me so peacefully from the rushing water.

"Syria's Uprising and ...Syria's Torments" ...& Ethiopia?

Thirty years ago, or a decade before, Ethiopia was promptly associated with Famine and Hunger, today or these days, it is a synonym for Famine too, but this time not alone; it has taken the rest of Horn of Africa with it! And the tragedy goes on as reported on all Medias of the globe. Thirty years ago, Dergue was taken to be guilty for that or the Monarchy a decade before. Be it or not, taking the sole responsibility for the tragedy, they have both paid for it. Today the nature of the tragedy is not less dramatic, if not more, but it is taken as "God-given" and nature is being accounted for it. No one "down to Earth" seems to to be accounted for it. The public governmental medias are underplaying this aspect of the story. Why, because, there is an apparent global responsibility for it.

The hypocrisy: -No one dares to bring this discourse to the public!

But the reality is, the Ethiopian regime as well as all the western powers plus the recent regional and Far East investment players of "development" (land grabbing & conflict managers), which have been the driving wheels of the region under the leadership of the TPLF administration are responsible for the human tragedy unfolding in the Horn of Africa! And because of this fact, the policy seems to be No Change is necessary!
*

However, for the vast majority of the people, given this Misery, Destitution and Famine as the outcome of the much propagated "Development, Modernization and investment promotion (ex. land grabbing)",  just like Syria (where for good, the people are fighting back to take their fate in their hands), for Ethiopia too, such

"Development, Modernization and investment are nothing but the ideology that legitimizes the wealth of this group and their privileged location vis-à-vis national resources by using the pretext of “the demands of development and encouraging investment.”

(See analysis on  http://www.jadaliyya.com/pages/index/2377/the-syrian-common_the-uprising-of-the-working-soci)

In Syria, tells the above
analysis further

"As for Ba`thist doctrine, in its rejectionist inflection, it is merely a language and set of symbols that help profiteering ideologues deceive themselves as they wallow with the mukhabarat and appear on Syrian TV giving sermons about patriotism to Syrians while they spend leisurely times in five star hotels at the expense of the Syrian people. This requires a more detailed study, which I hope to conduct someday, but it seems plausible in my view that the uprising is a reaction to this policy of “development and modernization” in general. This policy which combines vulgar political authoritarianism and a mode of development that is friendly to city centers and the rich, together with a modernist ideology that symbolizes a life style combining wealth, consumption and “opening.” This mélange is what has marked the reign of president Bashar al-Asad from its outset."

We can take the tenor of this for Ethiopia as well!

Mahmoud Darwish: A Traveller

A Traveller
Mahmoud Darwish
(March 13, 1941- August 9, 2008)

This road takes me; a horse guiding a horseman
A traveler like me cannot look back
I have walked far enough to know
where autumn begins
There, behind the river,
the last pomegranates ripen
in an additional summer
and a beauty mark grows
in the seed of the apple
The road and I will sleep like partners

Some more like the above, from Mahmoud Darwish (1
*
They fettered his mouth with chains,
And tied his hands to the rock of the dead.
They said: You're a murderer.
They took his food, his clothes and his banners,
And threw him into the well of the dead.
They said: You're a thief.
They threw him out of every port,
And took away his young beloved.
And then they said: You're a refugee.

I do not hate people.
I steal from no one.
However
If I am hungry
I will eat the flesh of my usurper.
Beware beware of my hunger
And of my anger.

Streets encircle us
As we walk among the bombs.
Are you used to death?
I'm used to life and to endless desire.
Do you know the dead?
I know the ones in love.

The ETHIOPIAN MATRIX

Difference is NORMAL,
Difference is NATURAL,
Difference is PROMOTION,
Difference is PRIMARY(1 and BEAUTIFUL
And
Never an Obstacle but a source of Motion and Elevation…
It is only the perception which causes all the presumed problems (of the so-called "Ethnicity" or whatever... "Identity" etc.)!
And
Basic is the HUMAN
Basic is the NATURE, which comprises ALL!
That is what we should call Identity – Our Human Identity –

That is ETHIOPIA.

All the other discourses on whatever identities we want to share, are just different modes of perceptions, and as a matter of fact, in the last analysis the overtures for the music of power-politics! Power Politics to empower the very few! Ethiopian History past and new is full of testimonies for this truth!

The following is an excellent account which highlights the "MATRIX", out of which WE would build our NEW ETHIOPIA; beyond all legacy regimes, their political outlooks and their failings!

We owe Many Thanks to our enlightening Ethiopian Brother Obang Metho!

 ....
"Let us now build bridges to each other like what happened at these meetings! The bridges we construct are not only for the present, but to be used and enjoyed by people of the future just like Ethiopians still love the eucalyptus trees; not only for its beauty, but also because it can be used for practical reasons—to build homes, to provide medication, for shelter and for many other uses! Menelik had the vision for the future that left us this tree; what will we leave to our descendents?
May God help us plant the seeds of reconciliation that will bring a legacy of love, justice, peace, harmony and prosperity to a New Ethiopia. Let us sow the seeds by reaching out to others, by admitting our own flaws, by forgiving each other for the wounds of the past and by appreciating the value that God has given to all human kind! What a joy it would be for us Ethiopians to leave such a legacy for those still to come!" ( Read More...)

The Legacy blocking the Emergence

The legacy is playing the primary role in the discussion below, blocking the emergence of "the  new":

http://addisvoice.com/2011/08/esat-debate-andargachew-tsigie-vs-ayalsew-dessie/

*

(Extract from my notes (How long in the Box)  on the point of our political legacy)

The big obstacle for the emergence of the New is
the legacy of the Ethiopian political class

Every section has to consult its "political wisdom and conscience" from the vantage point of the aftermath, which renders us all a "better mind", in the new collective mind of the new political world!

The global relation of forces have changed, the "cold war" is over, more than five decades have elapsed since the initial aspirations for a substantial change of the Ethiopian political system ever came in the minds of the protagonists; and we, including Ethiopia are in the 21st century!

IT IS HIGH TIME we "arrive in the future“!
Let us come out of the box!

The more we wait and live in the "blockade" the more time it takes to come to the Ethiopian NEW Era of Enlightenment against autocracy! In this aspect the old generation is especially deeply indebted to the new generation, so that the latter makes a real new beginning and renaissance! Progress comes more through learning from past failings rather than narrating once own saga and epic a hundred times to worship the presumable self-honored "heroic" deeds. Let THIS be the task of the far-would-be generation...to come.

Basic Inquiries:

1.
The Political Left:  What were the political blunders common to the whole legacy left!?
(1*

2.      The Feudal class/aristocracy and Monarchy:  What explains the political substance of this class in its specific Ethiopian context of the past and in the aftermath of Absolute Monarchy?

3.      The Political Right: What was the collective role and historical failings of the political "right" / the classical conservative section of the Ethiopian political landscape?

4.      Middle class – Where and how was / the Ethiopian middle class to be positioned in the Ethiopian political spectrum? Why were their presumable political representatives’ dormant or conspicuously inactive or lacking political moral courage in the past? Can they be represented today by the whole spectrum of the contemporary "opposition" parties? How authentically democratic and independent are they from the legacy active "groups" - their ideologies and political outlooks?

These stratifications of the social body are predominantly common objective products of our specific social evolution, with all the factors and functions of our own history prevailing in the context of the centuries-old Ethiopian socio-economic reality.

Perspective & Vision

Today, even after more than three decades of social evolution, in the aftermath of absolute monarchy, the tenor of the political landscape has not substantially changed and the Ethiopian political spectrum as a whole is highly loaded with the above legacy. Therefore the stalemate to make a real change and a new beginning; giving enough room and opportunity for the reign of autocracy!

There would be no substantial progress and a down-to-earth political reconciliation towards an authentic post-modernist democratic world-outlook in the political platform of the Ethiopian political class unless the essential legacy blunders of the Ethiopian political past (be it left or right oriented in the nationwide political spectrum) are reiterated and explicitly declared as political failings without any distinction and relativizing qualifications!(2*. I.e. Unequivocally and clearly specified to be chucked out for good to initiate a thorough renovation in the construction of a politically New Democratic Ethiopia – the Perspective & Vision – with the whole political spectrum (from the radical right through the center to the radical left playing their roles and defining their positions) with clear political distinctions and possible alliances like all healthy democratic communities all over the globe!

(1*  I know that it is simple to pretend wiser in the aftermath. But I know too that every section has its blunders and it doesn't get us forward if every section raises its finger to the other - "the other" - the "initial evil" -always looking for  "the scapegoat".
In this context I remember what used to be said way back in 1968 at the summit of the HSI University student movement. During a stalemate in the student uprising, delegates were sent to the Emperor to present their cases. The Emperor in his customary calm plural form, asked the delegates:
" Now you young men & women ; whose failing is taking place these days: "Yours" or "Ours"?
/"Inante gena tadagi lijoch nachihu, lemehonu, yatefanew egna nen weis inante ?"
እናንተ ታዳጊ ልጆች ናችሁ ለመሆኑ ያጠፋነው፦እኛ ነን ወይስ እናንተ? /
To this challenging inquiry one of the delegates, it is said, responded, in the following form:
"Your imperial majesty, neither You nor We made the mistakes, but it is "The TIME"'s error " -
"Janihoy, Tifategnaw ignam irswom aydelum, tifategnaw gizew new"
„ጃንሆይ ጥፋተኛው እኛም እርስዎም አይደሉም፦ ጥፋተኛው ጊዜው ነው!“
and managed to escape the challenge and incrimination.

Nonetheless,in my perception, I know that the Political Left  has the following failings:

Ideologically dogmatic, devoid of Ethiopian-nationalist pragmatism; unaware of statehood – the Ethiopian state formation.  A political blunder common to the whole legacy left (whether consciously or unconsciously instrumentalized by alien forces as "destabilizing agency" or as a political novice unaware of such an important political parameter like "the state")!

AND this is what is being fundamentally reflected in the following Dialogue, between the two corners:
